CULLMAN, Ala. - Seven people were arrested in Cullman County on Tuesday in connection with a United States federal grand jury indictment for conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute methamphetamine.

Agents with the Cullman Narcotics Enforcement Team (CNET) and deputies and investigators with the Cullman County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) assisted the United States Marshals Service and United States Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) in the arrests of Donna Ray Tucker, 51, of Crane Hill; Kristie Michelle Self, 42, of Bremen; Tonya Lynn Brock, 42, of Crane Hill; Daniel Wayne Peek, 33, of Jones Chapel; Michael Shane Durham, 39, of Cullman; Brandon Duane Combs, 33 of Cullman; and Samantha Ann Combs, 26, of Cullman.

All seven defendants had been previously arrested by the CCSO on related drug-charges. The CCSO said that by it working with the United States Attorney’s Office in the Northern District of Alabama, the Department of Justice adopted the drug cases that CCSO made against these seven defendants.

“These indictments and arrests yesterday were a good day in the fight against drug dealers here in Cullman County.  I can tell you during my 20 years in law enforcement drug dealers do not want to be indicted by the Department of Justice,” said Sheriff Matt Gentry. “I would like to thank the CNET agents, deputies and investigators for not only the job they did yesterday by locating all these defendants again, but also the job they continually here in Cullman County to combat drug dealers.  I would also like to thank USA Jay Town and his office for always being accessible and willing to work with us to get drugs and criminals out of Cullman County.”

"These indictments and arrests represent the hard work of our law enforcement partners, the depth of which continues to grow, and exemplifies our collective efforts to return our neighborhoods to their rightful owners...the law-abiding citizens," United States Attorney for the Northern District of Alabama, Jay E. Town, said.  "For those alpha criminals convicted of federal crimes, the Department of Justice has reserved bed space in federal prison, where there is no sanctuary of parole."

Zeb Little (Cullman County Sheriff's Office)

MONTOMERY, Ala.– Former Alabama Senate Majority Leader Zeb Little, 50, turned himself in Thursday in Cullman after being indicted by a Cullman County grand jury on three counts of first-degree felony theft of property. Cullman Police Department Capt. of Investigation Becky Boyd told The Tribune Friday morning that the case has been taken over by Alabama Attorney Gen. Steve Marshall.

Marshall's office issued the following statement Friday: "Following an investigation by the Cullman Police Department and the Attorney General’s Office, Attorney General Steve Marshall’s Criminal Trials Division presented evidence to a Cullman County grand jury on Feb. 11, resulting in the three-count indictment. Specifically, the indictment charges Little, an attorney, with three counts of first-degree theft of property for stealing a combined total of more than $25,000 of client trust funds."

Marshall's office said no further information about the investigation or about the defendant’s alleged crimes other than that stated in the indictment may be released at this time.

If convicted, Little faces a potential penalty of two to 20 years on each theft of property count. First-degree theft of property is a Class B felony.

Little, of Tuscaloosa, a Democrat and native of Cullman, served in the Alabama Senate representing District 4 from 1998 to 2010. He was the Senate Majority Leader and Floor Leader of the Senate from 2002 to 2010, when he was defeated by Republican Paul Bussman.

Little was booked into the Cullman County Detention Center Thursday on a  $15,000 property bond and has since been released.

CULLMAN, Ala. - The Cullman Police Department’s Crime Suppression Unit (CSU) on Saturday reported the arrests of six people. The arrests are from three separate incidents.

The CSU arrested Christian Davis Barnett, 22, of Cullman, charging him with four counts of unlawful distribution of a controlled substance for allegedly selling methamphetamine. He was also charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance, second-degree unlawful possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.

The CPD said Barnett was out on bond for multiple felony charges at the time of his arrest.  He was booked into the Cullman County Detention Center where he remains incarcerated.

In a second incident, the CSU arrested Lisa Diane Wise, 47, of Vinemont, charging her with unlawful distribution of a controlled substance for allegedly selling methamphetamine. She was also charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance.

Wise has made bond.

In a third incident, the CSU arrested Billy Leon Williams, Jr., 35, of Cullman after executing a search warrant at his residence. Officers allegedly recovered more than a pound of high-grade marijuana, along with drug paraphernalia items.  Williams, Jr. was charged with first-degree unlawful possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.

The CPD said Williams, Jr. was on probation at the time of his arrest.  He was booked into the Cullman County Detention Center where he remains incarcerated.

In a fourth incident, the CSU, along with patrol officers Jake Lambert, Clint Sanford and Bryan Medlock, went to the Days Inn off U.S. Highway 278 West in reference to a civil disturbance call.  After gaining consent to search the room, officers allegedly recovered methamphetamine, crack cocaine, marijuana and a stolen handgun.

Ashley Denise Moore, 34, and Ben Cody Scruggs, 31, both of Cullman, were charged with possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance, unlawful possession of a controlled substance, second-degree unlawful possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and fourth-degree receiving stolen property. The CPD said Moore also had outstanding warrants at the time of the arrest.

Courtney Lamar Copes, 36, of Birmingham was charged with possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance, unlawful possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, first-degree unlawful possession of marijuana and fourth-degree receiving stolen property.  The CPD said Copes is on probation in Jefferson County and had outstanding warrants for his arrest.

All three suspects were booked into the Cullman County Detention Center where they remain incarcerated.

UPDATE: Vinemont man confesses to calling in false bomb threats

Jimmy Reeves has a left ventricular assist device (LVAD). The external components of the LVAD are kept in a vest that Reeves must wear at all times. (Christy Perry for The Cullman Tribune)

Updated 2-28-19 4:39 p.m.

CULLMAN, Ala. - A Vinemont man who claimed to have been a victim of several false bomb threat calls in the Cullman area on Thursday, Feb. 28, 2019 confessed to the Cullman Police Department (CPD) that he made the calls himself. James "Jimmy" Reeves, 52, confessed to calling in possible bomb threats to Cullman 911 on five separate occasions. All the calls came from a private number. Sgt. Adam Clark was able to trace the calls with help from AT&T. He said each call came from a phone registered to Reeves.

On Monday, Feb. 25, 2019 Reeves, who has a left ventricular assist device (LVAD), and his family said Reeves was struggling due to strangers and their lack of awareness of the life-saving equipment. The external components of the LVAD are kept in a vest that Reeves must wear at all times. Reeves said Monday that in the last two months, he has been approached or surrounded by police three times due to others mistakenly believing the vest is possibly holding a bomb. The last two incidents happened last Saturday at the Five Below store and Wednesday night at Ninja Steakhouse.

During his confession it was revealed that Reeves was calling 911 to report a man in a suspicious vest possibly having a bomb. He admitted to calling 911 from Publix, Wal-Mart, Harbor Freight, Five Below, and most recently, Ninja.

Police said they have no evidence to suggest that Reeves’ family and friends were aware that Reeves was the person making the calls. His daughter, Shyanne Sparks, recently asked The Tribune and other media to help bring awareness to her father’s condition. She hoped that by doing so the calls would stop. Upon her father’s confession, Sparks was visibly upset and declined to answer questions.

Reeves recently did several media interviews. After AT&T determined the calls were coming from Reeves’ phone, Clark said, “It’s obvious when you hear the interviews and the 911 calls that it was him (Reeves).”

The Tribune spoke to Reeves after his confession, and he said, “I wanted to feel like somebody again. I used to have friends. They used to talk to me and come see me. Nothing I can say- there’s no excuse for what I’ve done.”

Reeves has also called in bomb scares in Morgan County and could face possible charges in Morgan County, but he denies having any lawsuits pending against them.

Reeves addressed Chief Kenny Culpepper after his confession, saying, “I am sorry Mr. Culpepper. I’m sorry to the public. I didn’t mean to hurt you, the public, or your officers or the EMS. I’ve screwed my life up again. I just wanted to be somebody.”

As of Thursday evening, no charges have been filed.

Brad Meeks (Cullman County Sheriff's Office)

Updated 3-1-19 at 4:09 p.m.

CULLMAN, Ala. - Bradford Neal Meeks, 28, of Bremen, the man awaiting trial for reckless murder in the death of Cullman High School student and athlete Curtis James Wilson, 15, on Sunday, May 7, 2017, has been arrested again by Cullman County authorities. Meeks was taken into custody Thursday for bail jumping, new charges of third-degree domestic violence- harassing communications and harassment, as well as unlawful possession of a controlled substance, according to a spokesman for the Cullman County Sheriff's Office, who said Meeks was found with methamphetamine when warrants were served. He is being held in the Cullman County Detention Center on a $25,000 cash bond.

Meeks was indicted by a Cullman County grand jury for reckless murder on Oct. 10, 2017, in connection with the fatal car crash that killed Wilson. Toxicology reports from UAB Hospital revealed that Meeks, the driver of the truck that hit Wilson and his mother, Ashley Wilson, then 43, had a blood alcohol content (BAC) of .256, approximately three times the legal limit, at the time of the wreck.

Following Meeks' arrest on Thursday, Feb. 28, 2019, his father, Billy Meeks, filed a motion to withdraw as the surety for his son's bond in the reckless murder case. Circuit Judge Gregory Nicholas approved the motion, pending the court being officially notified that Meeks is back in custody.

Meeks is also facing charges in Madison County for unrelated crimes.
