Cullman man sentenced to 90 years for child pornography

Gregory Jerome Lee

BIRMINGHAM - An Alabama man was sentenced Wednesday to 90 years in prison and 10 years of supervised release for production of child pornography involving seven minor victims, announced Acting Assistant Attorney General Kenneth A. Blanco of the Justice Department’s Criminal Division and U.S. Attorney Jay E. Town of the Northern District of Alabama.

Gregory Jerome Lee, 54, formerly of Cullman County, Alabama, pleaded guilty in January 2017 to four counts of production of child pornography.  U.S. District Judge Virginia Emerson Hopkins presided over the sentencing in Birmingham, Alabama.

According to court documents, beginning in September 1996 and continuing for over a decade, until August of 2007, Lee and his co-conspirators belonged to a group of sophisticated offenders who gathered in secret, password-protected, chat rooms to discuss their sexual interest in minors and the real-life sexual abuse of children being perpetrated by several group members.  Lee and others also used these chat rooms to advertise, distribute, receive, and possess child pornography.  Court documents state that from September of 1996 through December of 2004, Lee sexually abused at least seven different minors and that he frequently produced images and videos depicting his sexual exploitation of these children which he shared with his co-conspirators.

Trial Attorney Ralph Paradiso of the Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section (CEOS) of the Justice Department’s Criminal Division and Assistant U.S. Attorney Daniel Fortune of the Northern District of Alabama prosecuted the case.

This case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse, launched in May 2006 by the Department of Justice.  Led by U.S. Attorneys’ offices and CEOS, Project Safe Childhood marshals federal, state and local resources to better locate, apprehend and prosecute individuals who exploit children via the Internet, as well as to identify and rescue victims. The suspect allegedly traveled to Hanceville after talking to a minor online

CULLMAN COUNTY - A Russellville man was arrested on Thursday, charged with second-degree rape, according to the Cullman County Sheriff's Office.

Shawn Douglas Berryhill, 20, allegedly entered a home in Hanceville after communicating with a minor on social media. Berryhill's alleged victim came forward to the CCSO investigators after being interviewed by the Child Advocacy Center.

Because the crime involves a minor, the CCSO will not be releasing additional details, but did say Berryhill may be facing additional charges.

“I continually encourage parents, grandparents and anyone who has control over their children’s phones or social media accounts to check them regularly because predators use all the social media accounts like Facebook, Snapchat, Instagram, etc., looking for victims,” said Sheriff Matt Gentry. “I would like to thank our investigators and the CAC for their help on this case."

Berryhill is currently being held in the Cullman County Detention Center on a $7,500 cash bond.

Continued Boyd, “I would also like to thank the Warrior Police Department for their assistance in ending the pursuit and making the arrest(s).”

Patrick Joseph Cunningham, left; Gerald Wilson McDonald, right / Cullman County Sheriff's Office

HANCEVILLE - Two Hanceville men are behind bars following a two-week long investigation by the Cullman County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) and Cullman Narcotics Enforcement Team (CNET).

On Wednesday, Sept. 27, according to a media release from the CCSO, Patrick Joseph Cunningham, 37, and Gerald Wilson McDonald, 58, were arrested after a search warrant was executed at a residence on County Road 565 near Hanceville. The release stated that CNET agents had information that the homeowner, Cunningham, and another suspect, McDonald, were selling drugs at the residence.

Once agents made entry into the residence, they allegedly discovered ICE, a stronger and purer form of methamphetamine, marijuana, pills and drug paraphernalia. Cunningham was arrested at the scene.

McDonald was arrested later the same day when he was located at a residence on Golf Course Road. Methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia were allegedly found at this residence as well.

The CCSO says it seized a total of 45 grams of ICE (meth), marijuana, pills and other drug paraphernalia.

Cunningham was charged with trafficking in methamphetamine, three counts of unlawful possession of a controlled substance, two counts of second-degree unlawful possession of marijuana and two counts of unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia. He is being held in the Cullman County Detention Center on a $261,000 bond.

McDonald was charged with trafficking in methamphetamine, two counts of unlawful possession of a controlled substance, second-degree unlawful possession of marijuana, two counts of unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia and attempting to elude. McDonald also had two failure to appear (FTA) warrants for unlawful possession of a controlled substance, possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia. He is being held in the Cullman County Detention Center on a $258,000 property bond and $6,000 cash bond.

“This was pretty high-quality meth,” said Cullman County Sheriff Matt Gentry. “I am glad we were able to arrest these suspects and get the meth before it made it into our community. I would also like to thank the CNET agents for the good job they did on this case.”

HANCEVILLE– Here’s something you don’t hear every day. On Wednesday afternoon, the Hanceville Police Department recovered a stolen professional wrestling ring at JC Arena, located on Highway 31 North in Hanceville, following a tip from a local resident.

“We received information that there may be stolen property at the location (JC Arena),” HPD Chief Bob Long said. “Lt. Brannon Hammick made contact with the suspect, who agreed to meet us at the location, where he confessed. Lt. Hammick and Deputy Chief Adam Hadder are the ones who spearheaded this operation, and they did a good job recovering the stolen property and having the suspect confess.”

Long said the ring belonged to Southeastern Pro Wrestling, based out of Nauvoo in Walker County.

“It was stolen from Walker County,” he said. “The suspect took the trailer and all the contents. He confessed and now we are trying to get the equipment back to the owners.”

The HPD is transporting the wrestling ring and multiple metal barricades back to Walker County.

“The Walker County Sheriff’s Office was unable to retrieve and return the property to the owners,” said Long. “So the Hanceville Police Department, along with the assistance of the inmate workers, have loaded the wrestling ring and roughly 25 barricades onto a trailer and we are taking it back to the victims.”

The estimated value of the recovered wrestling ring and barricades is $25,000. Long said the suspect could face other charges, but until the investigation is concluded the suspect’s name will not be released.

“At this time, we are not releasing his name because other items were also discovered which may be connected to other thefts,” said Long.

CULLMAN - The Cullman Police Department on Tuesday arrested 24 people while conducting a felony warrant roundup. The suspects were arrested for a variety of charges involving drugs and thefts.

According to a media release from the CPD, most of the charges were drug-related but often drug crimes and thefts go hand in hand.

CPD Capt. of Investigation Becky Boyd said in the release that the roundup was the result of work by investigators, primarily Justin Craft and Scott Sanford, who are dedicated to working narcotic crimes, and a newly formed team of officers focused on suppressing crime in the city of Cullman. The team is made up by officers Trey Higginbotham, Dustin Colburn and Cole Kelley and is led by Sgt. Chris Thomason. Boyd says the team has been working since early summer and has focused on combating drug problems, working in high crime areas and serving outstanding warrants as well as working general patrol during shift shortages.

Those arrested were:

The CPD says the new Crime Suppression Team has been responsible for approximately 200 cases, which include some of the warrants served on Tuesday. These cases include undercover drug operations, trafficking and possession of illegal drugs (including methamphetamine, crack cocaine, opiates) and an assortment of other illegal drugs, recovery of stolen property and forgery.

Craft’s and Sanford’s primary responsibilities are working narcotics, according to Boyd. They work all cases involving the theft of medications, follow up on all tips received from the public about illegal drug use, conduct undercover operations including drug buys and search warrants, do surveillance and serve warrants.

Boyd says Craft and Sanford and the Crime Suppression Team often work together in their duties, saying it has been extremely beneficial in the efforts of the department to combat illegal drugs in the community.

The felony warrant roundup was conducted by the Investigative Division and Crime Suppression Team and assisted by Patrol Sgt. Intae Suh and Officer Kelly Hubbard.

“I could not be prouder of the work of all officers involved in this operation,” said Boyd. “We are dedicated to serve our citizens and will continue to be proactive in our efforts to limit criminal activity in our community. I would also like to pass along a message from Investigators Craft and Sanford to anyone selling illegal drugs in our community: ‘Anyone selling drugs in Cullman should know that the warrant book in not empty. Your name may still be on our list and we will be coming to see you.’”
