2 Colony men arrested for elder abuse

COLONY - Two Colony men were arrested on Thursday for elder abuse, according to the Cullman County Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff’s deputies responded to a welfare check on an elderly female under the care of Roger Lawrence McKinnon, 54 and Rufus Jerome Parker, 53. Once the deputies arrived at the residence, they heard the victim yell for assistance from her bedroom, said a statement from the CCSO. Deputies made entry and found the woman bedridden and unable to help herself.

In the course of investigation, deputies determined that McKinnon and Parker were allegedly taking the victim’s checks, instead of using the money to care for her. The victim told deputies she had been receiving calls from “check-cashing” establishments.

McKinnon was charged with third-degree elder abuse and neglect, along with possession of drug paraphernalia.

Parker was charged with third-degree elder abuse and neglect, as well as third-degree financial exploitation of the elderly.

Due to the nature of the crime, the CCSO is not releasing the victim’s name or details of her condition.

Both suspects are being held in the Cullman County Detention Center, each on a $4,000 bond.

Cullman PD seeing increasing number of vehicle thefts, break-ins

CULLMAN - The Cullman Police Department says vehicle break-ins and thefts seem to be on the rise in the area.

Lt. Gene Bates said that since November, at least four high-end vehicles have been stolen from area car dealerships. He said all four, and possibly a fifth, appear to be the work of the same person or group of people.

“There are lots of similarities in the kinds of vehicles taken.  We believe they’re all related,” said Bates. “These are brand new, and in almost all of the cases, top-of-the line vehicles. They have all the bells and whistles.”

According to Bates, the stolen vehicles range in value from around $30,000 to more than $70,000.

Dealerships hit include Cullman Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram, Mitch Smith Chevrolet and Bill Smith Buick GMC.

However, Bates said, “It’s not a unique thing to Cullman. It’s our belief this is a professional-type theft ring.”

Bates said similar thefts have happened across the state, and the dealerships’ insurance companies are aiding the department in making the connections. “We’re working with the insurance companies for the dealerships. They may insure other dealerships in other parts of the state and have similar claims reported, and they let us know that.”

As far as thefts from private citizens, Bates said there have been two cars stolen in the city recently, and those thefts were completely unrelated to the ones at the dealerships.

“Both were recovered,” he said. “In almost every case I can think of, the keys were left in the vehicle. Probably, it was people out looking to break into vehicles. The doors are opened, and they get in to see what they can find, and they find the keys.”

The two recovered vehicles had no damage.  One was located by a patrol officer and one by the owner.

Bates had two pieces of advice for residents: “Please take the keys out of the ignition. Please lock the doors,” he said. “If people would do those two things right there, it would cut down on a lot of thefts.”

Cullman Police investigating overnight home invasion on city's southwest side

CULLMAN - Cullman Police are investigating a home invasion that happened late Tuesday night on the city's southwest side. The incident occurred at a residence at 1011 Sheraton Road between 10 and 10:30 p.m.

According to Cullman Police Department Capt. of Investigation Becky Boyd, two suspects entered the home through an unlocked door. There was at least one handgun brandished, and one of the two homeowners was injured.

"The homeowner was pistol whipped," said Boyd. "The injured homeowner was treated and released."

Boyd said the two suspects did take property, although information about exactly what was taken is not being released.

"We feel like there was a reason that those homeowners were targeted, like there was a connection," said Boyd. "We don't feel like there is an active threat to the community."

She stressed that even though there is no active threat, residents should always keep their doors locked, both in the home and in vehicles. Also, Boyd said, record the serial numbers of property so that if your home or vehicle is burglarized, there's a better chance that property can be recovered.

Boyd said the CPD is working now following up on leads. Sgt. Eric Cole is the lead investigator. Anyone with any tips or information should contact Cole at 256-775-7170.

This is a developing story.

Multiple drug arrests made in separate cases

Left to right: Angel Johnson, Matthew Childers, John Goings and Brandon Laney / Cullman Police Department

CULLMAN -  The Cullman Police Department (CPD) reported multiple drug arrests on Thursday.

The first occurred on Tuesday, Feb. 6, when Cullman Crime Suppression Unit (CCSU) officers stopped a vehicle for a traffic violation on Alabama Highway 157.  According to the CPD, neither the driver nor the passenger had a valid driver’s license.

Officers allegedly recovered drug paraphernalia and 14.5 grams of methamphetamine when searching the vehicle. The passenger, Angel Desiree Johnson, 24, of Vinemont was arrested and charged with unlawful possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia.

Johnson is being held in the Cullman County Detention Center.

The second arrest also occurred on Tuesday, when CCSU officers again stopped a vehicle for a traffic violation, this time on Cherokee Avenue and Mize Road.

The CPD said that upon establishing probable cause to search the vehicle and occupants, officers recovered approximately 121 grams (4 ounces) of marijuana from the driver, identified as Matthew Edward Childers, 19, of Cullman. Childers also allegedly had a loaded revolver.

Childers was placed under arrest for first-degree unlawful possession of marijuana and carrying a pistol without a permit.

Childers, who was out on federal bond at the time of the arrest, was transported to the Cullman County Detention Center.

The third arrest followed a controlled buy in which John Edward Goings, 50, of Vinemont allegedly sold officers methamphetamine.

CCSU officers arrested him on Wednesday, Feb. 7.

Goings, who was on probation, was charged with unlawful distribution of a controlled substance and placed in the Cullman County Detention Center.

A fourth arrest by the CCSU also involved an undercover operation. Brandon Christopher Laney, 23, of Good Hope allegedly sold officers methamphetamine on three separate occasions.

Laney was charged with three counts of unlawful distribution of a controlled substance.

Laney was on probation at the time of his arrest. He remains incarcerated in the Cullman County Detention Center.

Left to right: Christopher Allen Haynes, Chad Thomas Wallace, Gregory Wade Wallace and Galon Wesley Parker / Cullman Police Department

CULLMAN - The Cullman Police Department has arrested four men for various forgery charges in the last three weeks, all as the result of a call from an alleged victim of identity theft back on Jan. 23.

The investigation began, according to Sgt. Adam Clark, when patrol officers responded to a call from a residence on Morgan Avenue Southwest. Patrol Officers David Brooks and Roy Bates responded to the call and made discoveries that prompted the investigation.

“Patrol officers David Brooks and Roy Bates did an outstanding job on the investigation of the initial call, which led to the search warrant,” said Clark.

As a result, Christopher Allen Haynes, 37, was arrested on Jan. 23 and charged with identity theft and possession of a forged instrument.  Chad Thomas Wallace, 43, and Gregory Wade Wallace, 47, were arrested on Feb. 5 and each charged with possession of a forgery device, forgery and possession of a forged instrument. Lastly, Galon Wesley Parker, 36, whom Clark said was just released from prison on Jan. 9, was arrested on Feb. 10 and charged with six counts of forgery, six counts of possession of a forged instrument and one count of possession of a forgery device.

As to how the investigation unfolded, Clark said, “They (the officers) got a call there (Morgan Avenue) because they had a victim from Decatur who had his vehicle stolen, and the victim said that someone had gotten a loan in his name and used that address.”

Clark said the officers went to the Morgan Avenue residence to investigate the identity theft. The officers made contact with a man at the residence who claimed to be the victim, not knowing the victim was sitting in the patrol car. The man impersonating the victim turned out to be Christopher Allen Haynes.

Clark said, “So, we identify him, and he was charged with identity theft because he had the guy’s social security card, he had a driver’s license made with that guy’s information, but with his picture on it. He admitted to using it to get a loan. We found out later that he used it to get phones from AT&T. Also, on his person he had a check in the victim’s name, and the check had ‘Group Services’ written on top of it as the company name.

“We started asking him where he got the check from; well, he tells us a guy named Galon Wesley Parker wrote him the check and Chris had went and cashed one with Galon that day at Jack’s Beverage in Trinity, Alabama. We start trying to talk to him a little bit more and he points into the living room and tells us he’s got a printer and a computer in there and that’s where he prints the checks from. We asked one of the occupants of the house, Gregory Wade Wallace is his name, asked him whose bedroom it was, and he said, ‘It’s mine,’ so we asked him if we could walk in there and when we walked in there we saw the printer, the computer and you could look in this cabinet and see a box of Office Depot checks, blank checks that they use to print.”

Clark continued, “They get Chris Haynes and we start to delve a little more into the check that he had because it was a forged check and that was for sure because John Paul Bryant, which is our victim from Decatur, we know that’s not his check already. So, he tells us that Galon is writing checks and Greg took us into the room and we saw all the stuff. There were a lot of people who stayed in that apartment, more than like five or six, and there were a couple beds in that room, so based on the information that guy gave us, officers stayed there and held the apartment, made sure nobody touched anything in the apartment and we went and wrote a search warrant.”

Clark said he and Sgt. Todd Chiaranda went to the residence with Officer Roy Bates and Officer David Brooks and served the search warrant. Allegedly recovered were two computers, check-writing software called “Checksoft,” the printer, the blank checks and hundreds of pre-written checks that were written to Chad Thomas Wallace, Gregory Wade Wallace, Galon Wesley Parker and another man.

“There were checks written to all of them which means to us, of course, they’re all probably writing checks. Chad Wallace, Greg Wallace and Galon Parker, they have all three been arrested and are all three currently incarcerated at the Cullman County Detention Center. I have also interviewed (another man) and he has confessed to cashing the checks that Galon wrote him. We interviewed Wesley (Galon), and Wesley kind of puts all the blame on everyone else, but he does admit to writing the checks. The accounts were opened in Wesley’s name; he actually opened four accounts in his name at different banks, at Regions Bank and Independent Bank which is out of Michigan, he opened up online accounts and then went in person to open one here at Regions and then took his personal bank account number and created checks in a business name, either ‘Group Services,’ ‘Total Construction’ or ‘Complete Contractors.’

“One of his points was that he didn’t forge them because he used his real account number, but I told him no, you did because that’s a personal bank account number and you’ve created business checks and been fraudulently cashing them throughout our community. They cashed them here, Decatur, Moulton, Arab, Jasper and possibly other places, there’s no telling.”

Clark and the Cullman Police Department received assistance from the Secret Service during their investigation.

"A U.S. Secret Service Agent came in and assisted me and helped me conduct interviews, and they’ve been really great assisting in the investigation. We got a search warrant for the content on the computers and the phones and stuff that we seized that day and the U.S. Secret Service is in possession of them getting the content off of them for us.”

Clark said that the amounts on the forged checks ranged anywhere from $200 to $1,000 and used multiple account numbers.

The investigation is ongoing at this time and Clark said there could be more arrests to come in connection with the case.
